The Iota Project

Iota - \ahy-OH-tuh\ - noun
1. a very small quantity; an infinitesimal amount.

Tech Go Green is looking for enthusiastic and resourceful people to join our team as committee members for this new program! This is perfect for people who have a full-time job but would like to get more involved in the community or for people who would like more experience under their belt. Read more about this exciting opportunity with a local non-profit organization!

What is the Iota Project?
The Iota Project is a new idea created by Tech Go Green that will educate teenagers and young adults about how they can lower their environmental impact in their everyday lives. The program will consist of a weekend retreat where attendees will live as sustainably as possible, therefore bringing their environmental impact to iota. Attendees will be divided into groups to foster team-building and friendly competition. Some challenges will include: living with no power, taking timed showers, buying and cooking food from the farmers’ market, using only alternative transportation, bartering goods from other groups, etc.

The objective of the program is to have attendees experience the wide spectrum of sustainable alternatives in a fun environment, whether small or extreme. After the trip, attendees can evaluate which alternatives they can incorporate into their own daily routines. The retreat is meant to be educational, eye-opening, rewarding, and fun!

Duties
Committee members will plan, develop, and execute the Iota Project program. This includes planning all activities and challenges, establishing a budget, getting sponsorships, promoting the program, representing Tech Go Green, and other duties as needed. Our goal is to conduct a pilot in May and initiate full program roll-out this summer. Committee members will also have the opportunity to facilitate the pilot project as a team leader.

Qualifications
-Organizational and time management skills.
-Ability to work in a team environment.
-Experience working with teenagers and young adults.
-Experience in event or program planning and coordination.
-High energy, strong initiative, and lots of great ideas!

Time Commitment
The position is voluntary (unpaid) and will require about 3-5 hours per week beginning immediately until June 2010. Hours may increase as we approach program launch but scheduling is very flexible and most work can be done from home. Weekly meetings will occur via Skype online conferencing, though there will be occasional in-office meetings as well.

Here are some frequently asked questions:

If I sign up as “attending” for this event, does it do anything?
No, this Facebook event was only created to promote these available positions. If you are interested in a committee position, please see the “How to Apply” section above.

How many available positions are there or how many people will be on the committee?
We are not looking for an exact number, though we do not want the committee to be too small or too big. The number of people will depend on who applies and when we feel we have the best committee to bring this vision to a reality.

I live really far away from Torrance. Can I still apply?
We are open to the possibility of committee members contributing strictly through telecommute. So if you live in Norcal or somewhere else far away, we still encourage you to apply!
