How To: Homemade Shampoo and Conditioner
Oct 30, 2009

As part of my ongoing quest to replace my cosmetic and hygiene products with homemade versions, I have been testing out different shampoo and conditioner recipes.  I’ve finally landed on two formulas that I think are worth sharing.  The first is a more traditional 2-in-1, while the second is simpler, but takes some adjusting.  It’s important to replace store bought shampoos and conditioners because they contain sodium lauryl sulfate and sodium laureth sulfate, both of which are toxic carcinogens that accumulate in the environment and persist for decades.  They also contain mineral oils, which are made from petroleum.

For the shampoo-conditioner combo, mix ½ of cup water, ½ of cup castile soap, 1 teaspoon of avocado oil (or another light vegetable oil), and 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar.  It’s thinner than store bought shampoos, but just as effective.  This mix does not strip your hair of its natural oils like traditional shampoo, and promotes a healthy scalp.

The second alternative involves only two ingredients: baking soda and vinegar.  To clean your hair, mix baking soda with enough water to form a thin paste, and scrub.  Rinse this mix out, and follow with 1 tablespoon of apple cider vinegar diluted in a cup of water (I put mine in a spray bottle for easy application).  This regimen allows your hair to employ its naturally regulated cleaning system, but it will take a while for your hair to adjust, because it’s accustomed to producing extra oil to make up for harsh shampoos.  If you gradually increase the number of days per week that you use the baking soda and vinegar combination, your hair will adapt over time.
