Last month, we implemented our newest program, a program that puts a twist on the recycling of e-waste. Traditionally, e-waste events consists of creating a designated drop-off point and the e-waste is then delivered to a recycling facility. However, this method is often inconvenient for business owners and employees, especially for those that have a large volume of e-waste. As a result, e-waste continues to sit at businesses until an easy method of disposal comes along. And that’s where Tech Go Green comes in. We wanted to bring the e-waste collection to the business itself.
First, we had to find a credible recycler. We wanted to ensure that the e-waste was truly being properly recycled, and that any sensitive data on particular equipment (such as computers and laptops) were destroyed. E-Recycling has been a great partner. With E-Recycling, we can guarantee that all materials are destroyed and recycled at their local facility in Paramount, CA. They also issue an official Certificate of Recycling & Destruction that states which processing facility was used and a description of the disposed materials.
Earlier this month, we had 7 wonderful volunteers help us promote our FREE e-waste recycling service through a phone marathon. Keeping our focus on Torrance businesses, our volunteers called several companies about participating in our e-waste round-up and we were really surprised by the positive response we received. Many businesses had also recognized our organization’s name - we’re getting the word out there!
Our first round-up was last Friday and I had the chance to accompany E-Recycling as they made their way to 5 locations throughout Torrance. At the end of the day, we collected almost 8 tons (~7,650 lbs.) of e-waste! We didn’t expect the monumental volume but we are very excited to have helped these businesses recycle!
I have a couple of people to thank for the success of our new program. First, I’d like to thank Anna Hwang, one of our dedicated staff members, for taking the lead in coordinating and planning this program. Also, I’d like to thank our 7 volunteers that spent 3 hours each calling numerous business throughout Torrance. Lastly, thank you to the participating businesses for properly recycling your e-waste and promoting sustainable business practices. This program was a HUGE success and we definitely plan to continue serving the business community with our FREE e-waste recycling service!
