Build me a Light Box!
Feb 14, 2009

by: Ivan Kan

Since we required a better light exposure device that would handle more detail in the t-shirt print, I decided to build a light box. Taking an old X-ray viewing box, I was able to combine the two separate units into one large one. That way we could create a larger print. Hopefully the tech go green shirts will be ready asap. But for now, enjoy this documentation of my valentines day evening project.

Using a $2 junior hacksaw I purchased from Home Depot, I was able to saw the dividing steel panel. Bending the steal panel proved to be the harder part.

Cutting metal is harder than it looks.

Fully dis-assembled, I inspected the ballasts and the wiring. Since the X-ray used to be a wall mounted piece, I had to adapt it to a wall socket.

Light box with the ballast removed. After a trip to both Home Depot and Lowes, I realized that the ballast was compatible with the newer t8 lights, so i had to put them back in. (T12’s are less efficient and also have much less light output)

The standard socket for a linear fluorescent bulb.

Wiring 101

TADA! and the light box is complete. I hope you enjoyed the show!
