Book Review: Hot, Flat, and Crowded
Dec 22, 2009

I recently read Thomas Friedman’s latest book, Hot, Flat, and Crowded, which explains how the current environmental crisis is a result of the confluence of global warming, globalization, and overpopulation.  Friedman also uses the book to call for a “green revolution” and outlines exactly how it must come about.  I found this to be an informative and engaging read, filled with illustrative examples and clear arguments to support his proposals.  I would highly recommend the book to anyone looking to understand the variety of factors that have created and entrenched the current environmental situation.  That said, anyone who is familiar with this area may find the book somewhat repetitive and elementary.

In my opinion, the most fascinating portion of Friedman’s book is his depiction of a green future.  He describes a litany of technological advances that would completely change the way we interact with our cars, appliances, and power suppliers to utilize energy most effectively.  All electronic devices in the home would work together through a single system to optimize their use, and power would be purchased and sold like stocks, rather than at an arbitrarily set price.

I also appreciate Friedman’s call to arms when he describes his vision of the green revolution.  He criticizes the media’s provision of tips for “easy” ways to be environmentally friendly because it is too pressing and expansive an issue to be taken lightly.  For real change to be made, Americans must appreciate the gravity of the situation and be willing to make profound changes to the way they live their lives.
